This story was set in the year 1327. When King Edward III acceded to the English throne in the year January 25, and on February 1st became King of England. It is the first novel of an Italian murder, which means that the setting is in an Italian Monastery. The two main characters had visited the monastery. The story was narrated by Adso, the helper of the main character, Brother William. The story was mostly about him.
On the trip in the monastery, suddenly, somebody got murdered, leaving the whole Monastery shaken with fear. William accepted the Abbot’s request to help find the murder. So on was the quest, William started talking to many people to search for clues. He interviewed the herbalist to find out which herb killed. Meanwhile, Adso just watched, and learned.
The story got even more and more confusing, as more people died. William noticed that three of their fingers were stained with black, and their tongue was black too. They were also found in random places, like death in the bathtub. And their corpses mostly found in water, looked recent, confusing the ‘detective’ even more, and frustrating him.
This story was actually a nonfiction story about a crime that happened in Holcomb, Kansas. The author actually talked to the killers, holding personal interviews for the book, having a better relationship with Perry Edward Smith, then the other ex-killer, Richard Dick Hickock. Both were soon hanged to death after five years of a death row.
The Clutters were good people, rich, and widely known and respected. Mr Clutter, and his wife, Bonnie Fox, and their four children, three daughters and one son. Eveanna and Beverly had already moved out, with Eveanna already having a son, and the two young children, Nancy, who was 16, and had a boyfriend named Bobbie, and Kenyon, who was 15.
Trying to solve a murder mystery is like trying to find a golden needle in a mountain of hay. You have suspects, and you will often meet dead ends. The police worked so hard trying to find out who killed the Clutter family. It could not be Bobbie, for he was already tested, and it could not be the guy who was down the street that morning. The police, was out of ideas to find the criminal.
What Tom Ripley wanted is to be rich, and happy, but it is not possible yet. He goes around the streets, being a nobody, trying to avoid the cops left and right, from a possible recent crime. The story starts with Tom feeling that he is being followed. He tries to shake off whoever is following him, with the possible theory that he is being shadowed by the police. I could imagine him clearly in my mind, a thin man with a long coat and a hat to cover his face, and a pipe sticking out, looking as inconspicuous as possible.
When he is finally cornered by his follower, Tom finds out that (1) His follower is not a cop. (2) It is Mr.Greenleaf, the father of one of Tom’s old friends, Dickie Greenleaf, or rather, Richard Greenleaf. (3) Mr. Greenleaf, and his wife who suffers lukemia, (3) Tom is getting paid for a trip to Europe and for everything after that, under the condition that he has try and persuade Dickie to come home. Tom happily obliges.
